Studying
at UK High Schools
Types
of UK School
For
non-natives of EEC countries, unless parents are resident
in the UK it is not possible for their children to enter state-funded
schools. However, the UK is home to the world's most prestigious
private high school sector (known as "public schools" in the
UK) with some schools over 1000 years old. Overseas students
have been taking advantage of the benefits of a traditional
high school education in the UK for hundreds of years.
Taiwan
/ UK High School Comparison
One
of the key differences between Taiwan and UK high schools
is that in most parts of the UK* children start formal education
at the age of 5 and complete 13 full years of education
before entering university at the age of 18. In Taiwan only
12 years of formal education are completed before university.

International Study Centres (ISCs)
British
private high schools are now enrolling large numbers of overseas
(non native speaking) students. However, as tuition is all
in English, it is difficult for them to cope with the mainstream
academic school until they are able to use the language fluently
enough to be able to understand and join in. Some schools
have recognised there is a need to prepare non-native speakers
for high school in the UK and have opened "International Study
Centres" (ISCs).
