    BEET Language Centre

    Established: 1979

Introduction

BEET Language Centre began in 1979, with three students! Since then, the school has grown rapidly in size and reputation. Now, hundreds of students pass through our doors each year.

Importantly, we remain an independent school. We are not part of a large group of schools. Accreditted by the British Council, BEET is one of only three Bournemouth schools to be members of Quality English, the organisation of Britain's leading independent language schools. We are also members of IALC, RALSA, TEN and Business English UK

BEET is medium sized. This means we are large enough to provide a properly structured learning programme, but also small enough to give you individual attention throughout your stay.

Facilities include 2 computer centres (with a total of 34 computers on ADSL broadband) and language laboratory units, a 4000-book library, university counselling centre, 16 classrooms with interactive whiteboards, cafeteria and free car parking.

Most students are aged between 20 and 30, but many are older (72 is the oldest so far!). Our minimum age is 17.

From the beginning, we have believed in the maxim of excellence. Our teachers are qualified, of course. However, what we seek in a teacher cannot be written on a diploma. It is the quality of talent, the ability to turn professionalism into inspiration.

This philosophy applies to everything we do, whether inside or outside the classroom. A top language school offers more than education. It is a total service, including accommodation, welfare, a full extra-curricular programme, student counselling, even a school canteen where you can buy good food at low prices. All of this must be of consistently high quality, and at a personal level. At BEET, you are guaranteed this.

We also believe that a friendly, international atmosphere is essential to good learning and an enjoyable, productive time in England. At BEET, we normally have between twenty and forty-five different nationalities at one time.

In 2001, we bought the International Teaching and Training Centre (ITTC) and moved the teacher training unit into our main school premises. ITTC is one of the UK's leading training centres, offering a range of courses including the CELTA and DELTA, validated by the University of Cambridge, and overseas teachers' courses.

Location:

Bournemouth is without question one of the finest university towns on England's South coast. Its beauty and numerous facilities have helped to make it an important centre of tourism, education and business. Harper and Queen's described us as the next coolest place on the planet!

Bournemouth has now three times been voted England's best holiday resort. Its extensive facilities are ideal for both the holiday-maker and the many thousands of university and college students who live here. It is also a town of parks and flowers, and winner of the European "Entente Florale". BEET also has a floral reputation, being a regular winner of the annual Bournemouth in Bloom competition.

Bournemouth has become very popular with the business world. Several large companies have moved their offices into the town. We are also a major UK conference centre.

An Eventful Town
Bournemouth hosts numerous events during the year, including powerboat races, vintage car rallies, international tennis championships and windsurfing competitions. During the summer, there are weekly firework displays from the pier, laser-light shows, the Musicmakers Festival and the unique Flowers by Candlelight, when the people of Bournemouth gather to light 15,000 candles in the Central Gardens.

Entertainment
Bournemouth has five theatres and concert halls, offering a huge selection of events throughout the year. There are plays, pop and classical concerts, musicals, opera, ballet and comedy. Bournemouth has two orchestras, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Bournemouth Sinfonetta.

Three cinema complexes contain a total of eighteen screens, showing everything from classics to the latest films on release. There is also an IMAX 3-D cinema.

There are two museums worth visiting: The Shelley Museum, devoted to the works of the poet, Percy Shelley. His wife, Mary Shelley, wrote Frankenstein. The other main museum is the Russell-Cotes, with its superb collection of English and Oriental art, together with other displays.

Teaching:

The reputation of our school is largely attributable to the high quality of our teaching staff. All our teachers are highly-motivated specialists in the teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and each possesses a Teaching Certificate or Diploma.

Many of our teachers have taught in other countries. This has given them an invaluable insight into the problems you may face when studying abroad.

At BEET, we employ the most efficient teaching methods available. We use the latest and best coursebooks, together with audio, audio-visual and computer-based aids.

The school runs regular in-service training programmes for all our teachers. In this way we keep up to date with the latest developments in methodology and can assimilate the different teaching techniques currently in use.
