ELC YorkEstablished: 1997
The English Language Centre York was established in 1997 by Hugh and Judy MacDermot, with the aim of creating an English Language school offering top quality courses in a friendly and professional atmosphere and in beautiful surroundings. Although the English Language Centre has grown rapidly since opening, it is happily still a relatively small school with a famously friendly atmosphere. Hugh and Judy are still both actively involved in the day-to-day running of the centre to ensure that everything is going smoothly. You will find that their office door is open all day - an invitation for you to drop in and ask questions, discuss your course or just have a chat.
The English Language Centre building is part of York's history - it is an historic Georgian house built in 1750 and carefully adapted for use as an English school. It is situated inside the 700 year old walls in the heart of the most historic part of the city. York has been attracting visitors for nearly 2000 years, and amongst the first visitors were the Romans who built a fortress in 71 AD. The beautiful York cathedral is the largest and most magnificent medieval building in Britain. It dates back to 1220 and took 250 years to complete. Nowadays, York combines the old with the new - it is a very convenient city with cinemas, theatres, museums, restaurants, pubs and clubs and an opera house. In June 2007 York was named European Tourism City of the Year at the European Cities Tourism Awards".
The ELC York is open all year round. On arrival you will be given an assessment test so that we can place you in a class at the right level. During your course your progress will be monitored and you will have frequent opportunities to discuss your progress with your course tutor. At the end of your course we will give you an attendance certificate. Your class will be taught by a team of 2 or 3 teachers, each responsible for different parts of the programme to ensure that you get practice in all aspects of English. All our teachers are experienced and qualified. Our teachers use a wide variety of original and published materials- books, cassettes, videos and CDs to make your lessons interesting and fun.
