University of Portsmouth

Introduction

The University has its roots in the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Arts and Sciences which opened in 1869, and is now one of the most successful of the UKs new Universities. Of the 20,000 students around 3,500 are International students whove joined from over 115 different countries, so if you decide to come and study here in Portsmouth you can be sure of a very warm welcome.

Their five faculties (Business, Creative and Cultural Industries, Science, Humanities and Technology) offer a wide range of courses, from Foundation to Postgraduate level in a wide variety of courses, from Art and Design, to International Relations, Translation, Psychology, Engineering and Business, and all are focussed on real-world skills that will help you in finding employment after you graduate. All of their Undergraduate programmes are open to Year Abroad students and, alongside their partner language school, Language Specialists International, they can offer you entry points in February, April and October, with the chance to work on your English skills before you begin your University course.

Their large International Office is designed to support you at every stage of your studies, from your initial application, through your arrival in Portsmouth and right on to Graduation. They guarantee International students a place in a University Hall of Residence for their first year of study, organise free airport pick-ups from Heathrow airport, run a two-week orientation programme when you first arrive and have International student advisors to assist you with any problems you might have once you are here. They also run regular social events and coach trips that will give you the chance to meet new friends and to get out and see more of the UK.

The University itself is right at the centre of the historic city of Portsmouth, on the South coast of England, just 90 minutes from London by train and 90 minutes from Heathrow airport. Voted one of the UKs safest Universities, the city also enjoys some of the sunniest weather in the country and the beach is only 10 minutes walk from many of the University buildings. Portsmouth is the international ferry port for France and Spain, and with two International airports less than an hour away by bus or train, there are lots of opportunities for travelling in Europe or the rest of the UK.
