Cranfield University
Established: 1946
Introduction
Cranfield needs a little explanation as it differs greatly from other UK universities. It has no undergraduate students, and although it offers some taught postgraduate courses, it describes itself as research led which means it is ideal for PhD or MPhil candidates in the fields of science and engineering. The university developed from military establishments and is located on two small rural campuses in Oxfordshire and Bedfordshire. This is definitely an institution for the specialist. Check carefully that you are working in the same area to find out if Cranfield is the place for you. Also note that due to the technical nature of the courses, fees at Cranfield are expensive, so it may be more suitable for students with government funding rather than self-funded students.
